City Pages Review:

“This outstanding 15-minute short from local director Gregg Holtgrewe (co-directed by his brother Tim) compresses the tale of a kidnapping into a pile-up of claustrophobic images; the storytelling is like the account of a patient who’s suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder….In his previous features, including Waiting All Day for the Green Face of the Hummingbird (If I Were a Lily), Holtgrewe has shown a knack for drawing out moments of paralyzing vulnerability; here, the material itself seems equally vulnerable.”

“(yielding to) a willing breath” (2006):

“…openhearted.”
-Colin Colvert (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

*Official Selection: 2006 Solstice Film Festival

This 82 minute feature shot in the summer of 2005 on a micro-budget of $3,500, follows protagonist Bryan (Paul Cram) as he struggles to come to grips with the death of his girlfriend. With the help of a new neighbor, Sarah (Molly McCaffrey), and an unlikely friend in Stanley (Charles Brin), Bryan embarks on a journey of affirmation, not only changing his own life, but the lives of those around him as well

.

Subtle, honest, and purposeful, this second feature film from writer/director Holtgrewe takes the time to look at the small moments…moments as minute as each small breath. The movie also stars T. Mychael Rambo, Katie Guentzel and Zach Hammill (McKnight Screenwriting Grant recipient).

“Waiting All Day for the Green Face of the Hummingbird” (2003):

“It’s more like Lost Highway than Twin Peaks. But it’s heterosexual.”

A self-absorbed young man, Geoffery Sherman, is obsessed with solitude and the control it gives him. Following the news of his mother’s death, an antagonistic paperboy challenges Geoffery to face his fear of the outside world. His security is disrupted and Geoffery’s relationship with his wife spins out of control. After losing command over his wife, Geoffery finds sanctuary in a passive mistress. Taking an aggressively dynamic turn, the women in his world become impossible to placate and Geoffery’s world spirals into a darkly comedic scenario of internal conflict.

City Pages Review:

“Twin Cities-based director Gregg Holtgrewe takes a Hal Hartley-style approach to the proceedings (note the clipped dialogue that the characters themselves don’t realize is funny), and never imposes himself on Geoff, aptly avoiding a cramped feel to his tiny flat. (After all, why would Geoff feel claustrophobic there? It’s the only place he wants to be.) The script smartly withholds an explanation of how the guy ended up in such a state, making him less of a case study than an eerie freak of nature.” (Joseph Golden)
